Presentation and Roundtable Discussion for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff members are often in a position to notice when a student has experienced a traumatic event such as a sexual assault, or is being abused by a dating partner. This presentation and roundtable discussion will provide information about the problem on our campus, as well as prevention strategies and effective ways to respond to students.
3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. -- Presentation: "The Language of Sexual Assault"
During this presentation participants will explore the cultural and legal meaning of the language we use to talk about sexual assault and rape: how pop culture and our underlying assumptions inform our language, how language defines responsibility and severity, and how the words we use influence personal and institutional response. A brief overview of the Clery Act will include information regarding the responsibilities of mandated reporters on college campuses.

4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. -- Roundtable Discussion
This facilitated discussion will focus on how to recognize and help a student or friend who has experienced sexual assault or is being abused by a dating partner.
