The Weilerstein Trio--composed of violinist Donald Weilerstein; his wife, pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein; and their daughter, cellist Alisa Weilerstein--will give a free concert at Ithaca College on Friday, March 17. Beginning at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music, the performance will feature works by Dvorak, including the Three Romantic Pieces for Violin and Piano; the Trio in G Minor, "Quiet Woods" for cello and piano; and the Piano Trio in E Minor, also known as the "Dumky" trio.
The Weilerstein Trio is coming to campus thanks to a grant from the Robert G. Boehmler Community Foundation. Boehmler, who received a bachelor's degree from the Ithaca College School of Music in 1938 and a master's degree in 1961, was a musician and educator who established this foundation to support education in the communities in which he lived. A music teacher in the Palmyra-Macedon (New York) School District for many years, Boehmler died in 1998.
Currently the trio-in-residence at the New England Conservatory of Music, the Weilerstein Trio first performed publicly at the Round Top Festival in Texas, when Alisa was six years old. Since then, the group has performed in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as other prominent venues in Cleveland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Having gained a wide following among audiences in the United States, the Weilerstein Trio made its London debut last season at the Royal Academy of Music.
The trio has appeared on several national radio programs, including "St. Paul Sunday" and NPR's "Performance Today." Last fall Alisa and Vivian were featured in More magazine and on the "Jane Pauley Show."
The Ithaca College School of Music offers some 300 free concerts each academic year. More information on these performances is available by calling (607) 274-3717 or visiting www.ithaca.edu/concerts.
