Award-winning historian Rachel Maines will discuss her book The Technology of Orgasm: Hysteria, the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction Thursday, March 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the lounge, second floor of Park Hall.

Maines' book, a result of exhaustive research, discusses a forgotten chapter in medical history: the late 19th and early 20th century when women were often diagnosed by the male medical profession with "hysteria". Her book, scholarly and entertaining, humorous and ironic, examines the medical control of women and has implications for us today.

Her work has won several awards, including the Herbert Feis Prize which recognizes the work of independent historians. This book has been called important, ground breaking, and not your ordinary scholarly work.

The presentation is part of Women's History Month and is free and open to the public.
