I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Asma Barlas, professor of politics, has agreed to serve a three-year term as the director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity. Barlas will assume the responsibilities of her new position on June 1, 2006.
Many members of the campus community will remember that Dr. Barlas is the founding director of the Center and that under her leadership the Center offered three highly regarded lecture series on Islam, music of the African Diaspora, and on race and its meanings. We look forward to Dr. Barlas’ leadership in moving the Center forward on curriculum development, working with faculty across the campus, and in serving as a catalyst for new interdisciplinary initiatives. For the 2006-07 academic year, Dr. Barlas is planning a series on “Global Fury, Global Fears: Understanding Muslims.”
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Barlas on her new position and in welcoming her back to the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity.
