Preview of New Web Design

Contributed by Tom Torello on 07/25/06

The web development team will implement a new web design strategy that will affect many of the top-level Ithaca College websites. For a preview of the designs go to www.ithaca.edu/brand/design.

The web development team, a partnership between marketing communications, ITS, and admission, has been working on a major web initiative for more than a year now. The WIBI (Web Infrastructure and Branding Initiative) project includes the implementation of a powerful new content management system and the rebranding of the College’s top-level sites.

The designs previewed at www.ithaca.edu/brand/design are not live sites, but images or “screen shots” of what the pages will look like. They are still works in progress with much of the content being written and reviewed and designs being finalized by the team.

The new designs will also be automatically implemented on all faculty and department sites created in Web Profile Manager (WPM). If you maintain a site through WPM, you won't need to do a thing to include the new design. If you'd like to see how your site will look, log in to WPM and follow the link to a preview.

We've received very positive feedback from many constituents on campus, and we're excited about the work we've done. We hope you will be, too!

The launch for the new designs is planned for mid- to late August.

The new website looks amazing! It's intuitive, flows nicely, and looks extremely professional. I can't wait to use it!

I am thoroughly pleased with the new design. I have just a few comments:
(1) I assume that the links will be of the style where the underline only appears upon mouseover. This may be confusing for some older users who are trained to look for the "blue underlined text" of a link.
(2) On the screenshot of the "academics" page, the School of Music and DIIS links are "below the fold" of scrolling on my 1024x768 screen. I don't want these two great academic areas at Ithaca to be overlooked!
(3) I'm sure it has been thought out, but make sure the site fits on an 800x600 screen - according to http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_pressbox43-screen-resolutions.html, 13.81% of US web users have their screens at this setting.

Ithaca is finally revamping it's website! I graduated this year and it's been the same since the time I started looking at IC back in high school. This is long overdue. That said, I think it looks very professional and it's an excellent improvement for the school.

Only comment: On the communications page (and I'm sure on other pages) please make the extra-curricular tabs (ICTV, WICB, Ithaca, etc.) random in terms of precedence. I'm sure someone already thought of this, but we don't want one specific student media having preference every time someone clicks the page.

Looking forward to seeing it!
