On Thursday, August 24, the web team is launching a new website for the College.
The team has been working for a year now on the Web Infrastructure and Branding Initiative (WIBI), and they're very excited to share our work with the campus.
The most noticeable piece of our project is the new design, but the bulk of our work has been in envisioning, architecting, and creating a new, complex infrastructure of databases, content management systems, and dynamic content. What does that mean?
• The new infrastructure means that we can now use the same content on multiple sites but without having to change it in multiple places. So, for example, the contact information on a department’s site will use the same content that’s in the online offices directory.
• Content management systems allow those of you who manage a website to be able to do it without having to learn special skills. The skills you need are simply word-processing and web-browsing ones.
• The new look, our brand identity, can be used consistently across the site, and the tools and processes now in place will help you communicate to prospective students and other audiences.
As extensive as it may seem, the team's work was somewhat limited--to the primary site; schools, departments, and faculty sites; and recruitment sites. Eventually the team will turn its attention to how the tools now in place can help other areas of the College in managing content on the web.
This team is an extremely dedicated and talented group of individuals from the Office of Marketing Communications, Information Technology Services, and the Office of Admission. I hope you'll all give them a big pat on the back for their hard work when you see them.
