The City of Ithaca’s Aurora Street Sewer Pipes Replacement Project is expected to begin after the first of September 2006.

The City of Ithaca’s Aurora Street Sewer Pipes Replacement Project is expected to begin after the first of September 2006. PHIL WHITNEY, Assistant Superintendent of Public Works, Water and Sewer Division, City of Ithaca explains that this six (6) week project will replace the city sewer pipes on Aurora Street from Columbia Street down to the Aurora Street Bridge. Most of the work will involve removing much of the sidewalks from one side of Aurora Street or the other in order to get to the sewer pipes. Some of the replacement of pipes will occur in the street itself. During this construction, Aurora Street traffic will be accessible but will be limited to one lane only with that lane being controlled by "flagmen". A detailed explanation of the project from WHITNEY follows.

On August 8, 20-06, Philip Erik Whitney, P.E., Asst. Supt. DPW, Water & Sewer Division, City of Ithaca released the following explanation of the City’s Sanitary Sewer Main Project Construction Schedule.

This project is part of a major inter-municipal sewer project, consisting of the replacement of more than a mile of the old existing sewer main, with a new 24-inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor. The project began last year at the intersection of First and Adams Streets. It is scheduled to be completed in 2007, ending at the intersection of South Aurora and Columbia Streets on the south hill.

To accommodate requests from the business community we will be skipping over the 100-Block of Aurora Street this year. The project will resume on the south side of the bridge over Green Street, and proceed south uphill along Aurora Street as follows (anticipated time frames shown in parentheses): from the south end of the bridge over East Green Street, uphill on the west side of the street along the route of the existing sidewalk, to the intersection of Prospect and South Aurora Streets (September/October 2006); from the intersection of Prospect and South Aurora Streets, continuing south uphill along the route of the existing sidewalk on the west side of the street, to the intersection of Pleasant and South Aurora Streets (October 2006); In 2007 we will be coming back to complete the 100 block of Aurora Street; from the intersection of East Seneca Street, to the intersection of East State Street (April/May 2007); from the intersection of East State Street, to the north end of the bridge over East Green Street (May/June 2007). The scheduling for the final pieces of the project is contingent on the replacement of the sanitary sewer main across the bridge. The replacement of the sewer main across the bridge is part of the Aurora Street Bridge Rebuild Project 2007. Once the new sewer main is in place across the bridge, we will make the final connections on both ends of the bridge, and install the last section of sewer main for project, from the intersection of Pleasant and South Aurora Streets, uphill along South Aurora Street in the south bound (west) lane, to the intersection of Columbia and South Aurora Streets.

We have been, and are working on the planning of the project work zone operations, in an effort to balance the requirements of the construction, with the daily needs of the people, and property affected by our operations. This will be an ongoing effort right through to the completion of our project. We want to minimize the inconvenience, and impacts of our construction operations on you, and the daily life of the community. We will be very appreciative of any suggestions you may have on how we can best accommodate both your needs, and those of the community throughout this project.

We will be available to discuss the project with you, address your concerns and answer your questions. Please contact us weekdays from 7:00AM to 3:30PM at the Water & Sewer Division Offices at 510 First Street. You can visit us in person, or contact us by phone at 272-1717, or by e-mail at erikw@cityofithaca.org . For those of you who have property fronting on the area of the project we are available to meet with you on site.
