Auditions for the Ithaca College Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be held on Wednesday, August 30 in the Friends Green Room (next to Hockett Recital Hall) at Whalen Center for Music. A sign-up sheet will be placed outside of that room. Please come early to your audition to fill out an information sheet. Auditions are open to all IC students regardless of major.
You will be asked to sing a jazz/pop standard song of your choice (please bring a leadsheet with you--accompaniment will be provided), to sightread, and to improvise (“scat”) over a simple chord progression. You need not have prior jazz experience, but strong musicianship and confidence are vital.
Vocal Jazz Ensemble meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00—7:50 PM. Students chosen are expected to participate for the full academic year. Credit for VJE is is .5 or 1.0 depending on student's major.
The ensemble consists of a 12-16 voice SATB choir accompanied by a rhythm section (auditions for the instrumental ensemble are on Thursday, August 31. See details at Steve Brown’s office in Whalen). We perform music in the tradition of jazz vocal groups like Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices. Some planned performances include on-campus concerts, a fall workshop/performance with the Trumansburg High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble,and a spring Vocal Jazz Festival with groups from Syracuse University and LeMoyne College.
