For the 2006 observance of Constitution Day, featured speaker Gitanjali Gutierriez, an attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, will discuss her experience representing Guantánamo prisoners at 7:30p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, in the Park Auditorium.
Ms. Gutierrez is an attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, a New York-based human rights organization litigating extensive challenges to the Executive’s post-9/11 anti-terrorism policies. Ms. Gutierrez’s work focuses on challenges to unlawful detention and torture, national security issues, and anti-terrorism practices. She was a member of the legal team representing the Guantánamo prisoners before the United States Supreme Court in 2004.
Since that time she has met with clients frequently at the military prison and coordinates the current habeas litigation safeguarding the rights of these men. In September 2005, she co-authored a report on the prisoner protests at Guantánamo.
Ms. Gutierrez is currently counsel for Mohammed al Qahtani, a Saudi citizen detained in Guantánamo, who was subjected to the “first special interrogation plan,” a regime of torture and inhuman treatment authorized by the Secretary of Defense.
Both Ms. Gutierrez’ speech and a reception afterwards are free and open to the public.
