Syracuse Symphony bassoonist David Ross and three of his colleagues will give a free recital of music of bassoon and strings on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. The concert will include works by Bernard Heiden, Franz Krommer, Franz Danzi, and a composition by Bernard Garfield, former principal bassoonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The string players are violinist Fred Klemperer, violist Heather Fais-Zampino, and cellist Walden Bass. Together the four players total nearly 100 years of combined service in the Syracuse Symphony.
David Ross received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Syracuse University, where he was a member of the music faculty from 1972-2004. He has also taught at Ithaca College, SUNY Potsdam, and Onondaga Community College. Ross joined the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in 1971, and, in addition, he has been a member of the Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra and Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra.
Fred Klemperer is a graduate of Ithaca College. He has performed at the Spoleto Festival and is a founding member of the Skaneateles Festival. Klemperer has been a first violinist with the Syracuse Symphony since 1970, a member of the SSO’s String Quartet and a member of the Seneca String Quartet.
Heather Fais has performed with the Spoleto Festival, Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, and the Württemberg State Opera Orchestra Stuttgart. Since 1984 she has been a member of the Syracuse Symphony. She is a member of the Seneca String Quartet.
Walden Bass is in his 33rd year with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. Prior to coming to Syracuse, he was principal cellist of the Charleston, W.Va. Symphony and co-principal of the Huntington, W.Va. Chamber Orchestra. He was also principal cellist of the Syracuse Camerata and is a charter member of the Seneca String Quartet.
