Anthropologist Joel Savishinsky's article, "First Impressions and Last Words: Condensing Elderly Lives into Three Line Haiku," was published int the November issue of Anthropology and Aging Quarterly. Joel's article describes how students in his "Aging and Culture" class used haiku, a rhythmic form of Japanese poetry, to try to get at the essence of the life history of an elderly informant. Using this method not only enabled students to more meaningfully penetrate an elder's life history, it also helped them to learn about themselves.
