The School of Health Sciences and Human Performance is proud to announce that the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (formerly Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services), has been granted continuing accreditation for their overall baccalaureate degree program by the National Recreation and Park Association Recreation (NRPA)/American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR) Council on Accreditation.
According to Dean Steven Siconolfi, “The dedication and professionalism of the faculty was evident in the accreditation report and reaffirms that the programs in the newly named RLS Department are of high quality and provide a value-added education for students at IC."
The Council commended the department on the following: student input into curriculum development; collaboration with students and alumni in professional development and scholarship; recognition of Dr. Linda Heyne, Chair, for forging supportive relationships with upper administration and overall leadership of the program. The only recommendation was that the college seek to provide individual office spaces in a common area for all department faculty.
The Mission of the NRPA is "To advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people." More information about this organization may be found on the website: www.nrpa.org
