In 1990, the State of New York passed a law prohibiting smoking in the public areas of basically all buildings within the state.
As such, the College has designated single smoking areas outside many buildings. These designated smoking areas can be found on the College’s website under Smoking Policy 2.8.10. (https://www.ithaca.edu/attorney/policies/vol2/Volume_2-20810.htm)
Specific attention needs to be brought to smoking on or around the loading dock at the Campus Center. This location is not a designated smoking area and smokers should consult the smoking policy for the designated smoking areas at the Campus Center.
Another area of concern is surrounding smoking in College owned cars and vans. The College’s smoking policy prohibits anyone from smoking in College owned cars or vans. Please make sure that all staff member’s that have access to College owned vehicles are reminded of the importance of this policy.
One last area of concern regarding designated smoking areas pertains to the current Job Hall smoking area. During the construction of the new Business School Building there will be a certain period of time that the Job Hall designated smoking area will be inaccessible due to construction that will occur above the smoking area. During this time Job Hall staff members will have to use the Textor Hall designated smoking area. Additional notices will be sent out in the future reminding staff members of this closure.
The College is required to enforce public health law and not allow smoking in public spaces. We ask smokers to keep this in mind by not smoking in vestibules and entranceways, and confining their smoking to the designated areas outside of each building.
Sciences should not be a smoking area. Due a unique ventilation system, this
building actually has negative pressure, meaning that each time the doors
open, air (and smoke) is drawn in. There are signs posted at these doors
indicating that these are not designated smoking areas.
