On Wednesday, January 31st, from 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m. in the Clark Lounge, the "Sustainability in the Community" academic partnership between Ithaca College and EcoVillage will offer a sustainability education training program. Jaimie Cloud, of the internationally-recognized Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education, will conduct a hands-on, interactive workshop to help IC faculty teach the core content and habits of mind of an education for sustainability across the disciplines.

This workshop is being offered in conjunction with the Ithaca City School District, and ICSD faculty are being invited to attend this workshop.

Workshop leader Jaimie Cloud is a major innovator in the field of sustainability education who has contributed a wide range of standards-based curriculum to New York City, Philadelphia, and other major metropolitan school districts. She also consults with universities, municipalities, and nonprofit organizations, and offers workshops that attract educators from around the world.

This workshop is designed so that participants can choose to participate for the full day, or just attend the morning or afternoon session if that's what your schedule allows.

Full day: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
OR 8:30 to 12:00
OR 1:00-5:00

8:30am – 12:00pm: Education for Sustainability
(EfS) Part I - "The Fish Game" Simulation
This hands-on workshop engages participants in an interactive, replicable, interdisciplinary classroom activity that combines systems thinking tools, ecological systems, and economics for a deeper understanding of our role in moving toward a more sustainable future. A discussion of 'mental models for sustainability' and 'activities to reach sustainable outcomes' provides participants with a hopeful paradigm for education and community action.

12:00pm-1:00pm: Break for lunch (provided for all participants)

1:00pm – 5:00pm: Education for Sustainability (EfS) Part II - Education for Sustainability Framework
Why educate for a sustainable future? This session will introduce the EfS framework, including the core content and habits of mind of EfS.
"Diminishing Resources" Activity
How can you, your faculty, and your students use systems thinking to solve problems? How do you know you are solving the real problem? How can you ensure that you don't create even more, unintended problems in your attempts? This session will make use of critical systems thinking tools of Education for Sustainability (EfS) in order to create a framework for effectively solving problems.

EfS Resources
What resources are available to educators for use in the classroom? We will introduce a variety of resources, including several of our courses and units.

Indicators
What is an indicator of progress? What indicators do we currently use in our society? Are these the best measures of our quality of life and, if not, what would be better measures?

This event is free to IC Faculty/Staff and EVI partners.

To make your reservation, please email EcoVillage educator Tina Nilsen-Hodges (nilshodg@ecovillage.ithaca.ny.us) with your name, department, and whether you will attend for the full day, or just the morning, or just the afternoon. Please also include a short description of your work and what you are hoping to learn by attending this workshop.
