The Gerontology Institute has grant money to support summer stipends for faculty to develop service learning activities in courses for the '07-'08 semester, preferably for the fall.
Funds come from a new 3-year external grant to support the development of courses or course activity that involves Service Learning with Elders. Service Learning with Elders means involving students and older adults together in activities that address issues facing older adults. This is not doing “for” elders but doing “with” them and it is expected that older adults would play significant roles in major class activities.
The Institute is also launching an initiative that will focus on the relationship between aging and creativity and the opportunities for innovation that will emerge as America’s population ages. The Institute currently has funds to support research, curriculum development, and activities with community organizations that focus on the links between creativity and aging. Many types of activities can be supported with the funding and we are particularly interested in projects that include students and community partners.
There is no formal deadline for inquiries about these opportunities, but funds are limited so faculty are encouraged to contact John Krout (krout@ithaca.edu), director of the Gerontology Institute, as soon as possible.
