I am pleased to announce that, effective February 1, Dr. James Malek will serve as provost and vice president for academic affairs on an interim basis. I anticipate that this appointment will extend through July 2007, when we expect to conclude our search for a successor to Peter Bardaglio.

The priorities for Jim’s work during this period will include major academic and institutional priorities, including planning and implementation of some elements of the Core Experience, All-College Honors Program and new “Student Success” model; preparation of the self-study for our Middle States reaccreditation; and providing leadership for Deans’ Council and the staff in the Office of the Provost.

Jim served as provost at IC from 1998 through 2001, when he left to assume the position of provost at Rollins College. Since retiring from Rollins in 2004, he has held interim positions at the University of South Florida as vice chancellor for academic affairs and associate vice president for enrollment planning and management.

Jim is eager to return to Ithaca to assist us during this transition. He brings extensive experience in academic administration as well as familiarity with IC. While serving as provost here, Jim led the college through the institutional planning process. I know that he will be proud of our many accomplishments, and interested in what remains on our agenda.

Jim expects to be in the office by February 5. I know that I can count on your support for Jim as he joins us in this important capacity during this transition.
