The "Out of the Closet and onto the Screen" film series continues this week, with showings of two films in observance of Black History Month on Thursday, February 1st. The films will screen at 7 pm and 8 pm in Textor 101.
At 7 pm the film "I Shall Not Be Removed: The Life of Marlon Riggs" will screen. The film is a touching memorial to Marlon Riggs, a gifted gay documentary filmmaker and courageous advocate for stigmatized people everywhere.
At 8 pm "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin" will be shown. This film chronicles the life of Bayard Rustin, organizer of the 1963 March on Washington who helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence.
Sponsored by the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, the film series this year focuses on the theme of heroes and history of the LGBT movement.
Because the history of LGBT people and movements is rarely taught, it is difficult for people--LGBT and non-LGBT alike--to learn about these fascinating yet sometimes lost stories. This year’s series will seek to fill in those gaps.
All screenings are free and open to the public.
