Bruce Thompson (Physics)and members of the Bioacoustics Laboratory at Cornell have received a grant of $39,000 from the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

The purpose of the grant is to study the impact of seismic exploration activities on the behavior of forest elephants in Loango Park, Gabon. Bruce and student Nik Batruch will travel to the park in March to deploy Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs), which will record the seismic and acoustic activity for two 3-month periods. Analysis of the data will determine the location of the exploration activity and the proximity of elephants and will help with conservation efforts.
