The public is invited to attend the final round of the third annual D’Addario Classical Guitar Competition at Ithaca College on Saturday, February 24. Starting at 4:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music, the event culminates a daylong competition involving 18 aspiring young musicians from high schools and universities throughout the Northeast.
The competition is open to high school and undergraduate college students of classical guitar.
All contestants will perform in the preliminary round in the morning, which will not be open to the public. The three to four finalists chosen will then compete in a public recital at 4:15 p.m., with an awards ceremony to follow. The D’Addario Foundation will award $1,000 to the winner of the collegiate division and $500 to the winner of the high school division.
The D’Addario Classical Guitar Competition is sponsored by the D’Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts and the Ithaca College School of Music.
"The D’Addario Foundation has supported the classical guitar program at Ithaca College since 1998, first with the Winter Guitar Festival and now with the competition, which is in its third year," says Townsend Plant, School of Music admission director and coordinator of the competition. "Last year’s competition was a wonderful success, and the level of the players was very high. We have restructured the competition this year to include both a collegiate prize and a high school prize. We are thrilled to be able to present this event once again and provide these young guitarists the opportunity to perform, receive constructive feedback, and be recognized for their outstanding talent."
