A talk on underwater archaeology in the Mediterranean Sea is being presented by the anthropology department in association with the Finger Lakes Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Society. The talk is on Tuesday, March 6, at 7:30 pm in CNS 208.
The speaker, Dr. Christopher Monroe, senior lecturer in near eastern studies at Cornell University, participated in several seasons of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology's excavation of a late bronze age shipwreck at Uluburun, Turkey. Excavations directed by George Bass and Cemal Pulak ended in 1994 with complete removal of the oldest ship ever excavated from the seabed. The ship sank in 1325-1300 BC, a time associated with the opulence of king Tutankhamun, expanding empires and developed international diplomacy. A summary of the excavation, and thoughts on what we can learn from this maritime disaster and its times, will be presented as a lecture with powerpoint slides, with discussion to follow.
