$500 C. P. Snow Scholar Award

Contributed by Craig Duncan on 03/07/07

Students are invited to apply to the annual C. P. Snow Scholar Award, which recognizes a student who has successfully combined scientific and humanistic studies at Ithaca College.

Has your student career been based on a perspective that bridges science and humanities? Do you believe that sciences and humanities can and should be integrated, and learn from one another? You may then be a candidate for the annual C. P. Snow Scholar Award, which includes a certificate, a $500 prize, and recognition at the annual Ithaca College C. P. Snow lecture. (This year's lecturer is well-known illustrator David Macaulay, the author of The Way Things Work. The lecture will be held Thursday April 26th in Park Auditorim at 7:30pm.)

C. P. Snow was a British philosopher, physicist, biographer, novelist, and social critic who believed that communication between mainstream scientists and humanists was essential for social progress.

Application procedure:

1. Students can be nominated for the award by a faculty member, or by student self-nomination.

2. The student must show an interdisciplinary humanities and science orientation.

3. Two letters of recommendation from faculty.

4. Minimum 3.0 GPA (submit transcript).

5. 1000 word essay. This should discuss how sciences and humanities may be integrated and how you have accomplished this perspective.

*Deadline*: Submit applications to Peter Melcher, 161 CNS, Biology Department (phone 274-3980, pmelcher@ithaca.edu) by Thursday, March 29th, 2007.
