Seven current and past students of Angus Godwin will give a free concert of music ranging from Handel and Mozart to Cole Porter and spirituals on Saturday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital at Ithaca College. Godwin, a professor of voice performance, is retiring this spring after a distinguished 38 year career teaching at IC.
The performers include alumni Matthew Bennett, who has performed on Broadway; Jeannie Clark Fisher, an active performer in the Dallas area; Jennifer Wells Button, a music teacher and performer in Rochester; recent graduate John Rozzoni; current students Megan Palange and Cory Walker; and a Cornell student, Nozomi Ando, who participates in the IC-CU exchange program. Faculty pianist Andrea Merrill and faculty guitarist Pablo Cohen will collaborate.
Godwin is a North Carolina native and earned a bachelor of church music from Capital University in Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53, including 13 months as a chaplain’s assistant in Japan. After that he spent time in New York City, performing extensively in the Juilliard Opera Theater and earning the professional diploma in voice. He completed a master’s from the Teachers College at Columbia University, and was appointed to the faculty at Ithaca College immediately after. He was signed by Columbia Artists Management and performed recitals in 47 states.
