Susan Orlean, veteran staff writer for “The New Yorker,” will visit Ithaca College on Thursday, April 12, to give a free talk, “A Writer’s Life.” Orlean’s discussion of her career path and what it means to be a writer will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Emerson Suites, Phillips Hall.

Orlean's talk is sponsored by the Roy H. Park School of Communications.

Orlean joined the “The New Yorker” in 1987, contributing both signed articles and “Talk of the Town” pieces. She has been a staff writer since 1992 and has written more than 50 “Talk of the Town” pieces, as well as “Profiles and Reporter at Large” articles. She is currently writing a series of American popular culture columns called “Popular Chronicles,” which have included articles on designer Bill Blass, Harlem high school basketball star Felipe Lopez, and the friends and neighbors of Tonya Harding.

Prior to writing for “The New Yorker,” Orlean was a contributing editor at “Rolling Stone” and also at “Vogue,” where she wrote on figures in the music and fashion industries. Previously, she had been a columnist, first for the “Boston Phoenix,” and then for the “Boston Globe Sunday Magazine.” She has also written for “The New York Times Magazine,” “Spy,” “Esquire” and “Outside.”

In addition to articles and columns, Orlean has written several books, including “The Orchid Thief,” a narrative about orchid poachers in Florida; “Red Sox and Blue Fish,” a compilation of columns she wrote for the “Globe Sunday Magazine”; and “Saturday Night,” a journal of essays that chronicle the Saturday nights she spent in communities across the country.
