This year, as part of the Distinguished Speaker in the Humanities series, the School of Humanities and Sciences will be honoring some of its own Humanities faculty and students at a reception on April 12, from 4:30-6pm in the Klingenstein Lounge.
At this Celebration, the School will recognize two faculty members who have been newly-appointed to prestigious professorships: the Ryan Professorship in the Humanities and the Dana Professorship in the Humanities/Arts. In addition, the School will honor the two student recipients of the Fred L. Emerson Foundation Humanities Collaboration Award who are working on projects during the spring 2007 semester. Food and wine will be available beginning at 4:30; the brief program honoring these award-winners will begin at 4:45.
The Ryan Professorship in the Humanities provides a faculty member an opportunity over a period of three years to complete a scholarly, pedagogical, or creative project that demonstrates distinctive connections among humanities disciplines. This award honors the legacy of Professor Robert Ryan, whose forty-year career in the History Department was distinguished by his dedication to students, his integrative vision of the humanities, and his continuing commitment to intellectual renewal.
The Dana Professorship Program began at Ithaca College in the mid-1970's, when the Charles A. Dana Foundation honored the college with an endowed fund to support several Dana professors. The Dana Professorship is the highest honor the college bestows upon a professor and the appointment is considered permanent throughout the professor's tenure here. The School of Humanities and Sciences has three Dana Professors, in the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities/Arts.
The Fred L. Emerson Foundation Humanities Collaboration Award is granted to meritorious H&S students who are eligible for financial aid to work directly with a member of the Humanities faculty in H&S on a collaborative scholarly project. Two students are currently working on projects through this program; additional awards have just been made to support student scholarly work during the summer and fall of 2007.
Please join us for this Celebration and in honoring these members of our campus community.
