Robert Ryan Lecture

Contributed by Hugh Egan on 04/13/07

Kevin Murphy, Robert Ryan professor of the humanities, will present a lecture, “The Irish Political Elegy: William Butler Yeats and Seamus Heaney,” on Tuesday, April 17, at 4pm in the Handwerker Gallery. This is the culmination of work Professor Murphy has undertaken since being named Robert Ryan Professor in 2004. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Robert Ryan Professorship in the Humanities was established in 2001 as part of a bequest from professor emeritus Robert Ryan, who passed away in 2000 after teaching 42 years at Ithaca College. Professor Ryan’s career was distinguished by his dedication to students, his integrative vision of the humanities, and his continuing commitment to intellectual renewal. With this lecture on Irish poetry, Kevin Murphy is ending his three-year term as Robert Ryan Professor. The new Robert Ryan Professor, 2007-2010, will be Michael Trotti, associate professor of history.
