In conjunction with the Celebration of Service, the Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club will be sponsoring a Mini-service Station in the North Foyer to support a huge service project. Here's your chance to be part of something big! How?

Read on!

Do you have any used sneakers or running shoes that you are not using or that your kids outgrew and that are still in good condition? Or maybe you have a pair that you forgot about--check your closets. Why?

The Canandaigua Rotary Club has launched what has become a huge service project to recycle usable footwear. Please take a moment to read the attached flyer that describes the project and to find out how you can be of service.

Pass the word, check with your family, friends, acquaintances... Collect used sneakers that are still in good, wearable condition and bring them to campus this Friday, April 20th, and drop them off at Ithaca Sunrise Rotary Club's collection station, located in the North Foyer, between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

You can also do one of the following:

    • Get your gently used sneakers to Christine Haase in the Philosophy & Religion Department in Dillingham Center. Chris will need to receive your sneaker donations by Thursday, May 3rd so that she can take them with her to the conference.

    • Drop your sneaker contributions off to Deborah Mohlenhoff in 319 Egbert Hall before Thursday, May 3rd.

    • Give them to any Rotarian who will be attending the District 7170 Conference May 4th - 6th, 2007.

Please tie pairs together tightly to avoid tangling.

Thank you for your help with this exciting project. Let’s see how many sneakers IC can collect to be passed on to others who can use them!

As described in the attached flyer, this project has a life of its own. Within about ten minutes of posting this yesterday, I received a pledge of two pairs of sneakers. At our Rotary meeting this morning, members brought me about five more pairs! Wow!

Keep 'em coming! You can either drop them off at the Celebration of Service tomorrow (April 20), or get them to me directly or through Deb Mohlenhoff before Thursday, May 3rd. I'm heading to the conference at Turning Stone in Verona, NY the next day.

When I return, I'll post a follow-up announcement of the total pairs of sneakers that I collected and, if I can get the figure, how many pairs were collected at the conference.

Thanks to all for your support!

I don't know what the specific plans are, but according to the flyer that I posted, sneakers have been distributed to/for:
    Florida hurricane victims - 1100 pair;
    Tsunami survivors - 900 pair;
    Malawi Children’s Village, Africa - 1400 pair;
    Louisiana Flood relief – 1500 pair;
    Salvation Army Family Relief - 7000 pair;
    Orphanage - Kenya, Africa - 800 pair.

When I deliver the sneakers that I have collected--I have 34 pair in hand as of this writing!--to the Canandaigua Rotary Club at the district conference next weekend, I will ask them if they have definitive plans for distribution. I will also follow-up with them after the conference to see if I can get a total amount of sneakers that they have received at the event. I will post all this in Intercom to the campus community. I can't wait to see what the grand total will be!
