Three staff members from Ithaca College are being honored at Women’s Expo 2007, sponsored by Cayuga Radio Group. Colleen Barnes, Marian Brown and Terry Martinez are among the “20 Outstanding Women You Should Know,” a group selected for their interesting and inspiring stories from the more than 200 nominees representing local women with diverse careers, backgrounds, volunteer activities and family lives.

Women’s Expo 2007 is being held on Thursday, May 10, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ithaca Hilton Garden Inn. Members of the community are encouraged to attend the event, which is free and open to the public.

An administrative assistant in the Office of Residential Life, Colleen Barnes has worked at Ithaca College for 16 years and has volunteered her time with a number of local organizations. She has served as a Staff Justice for the Office of Judicial Affairs and is a member of the college’s chapter of Toastmasters International. After donating one of her kidneys to a close friend, she has used her platform with Toastmasters to share her story and spread the word about organ donation. She has proposed that Ithaca College institute a Living Donor Leave Policy, and recommends visiting www.donatelife.net and www.kidney.org to learn more about organ donation.

Marian Brown serves as special assistant to the provost and vice president for academic affairs, and is a driving force behind sustainability efforts both on campus and in the community. She convenes the college’s Sustainability Subcommittee and serves on the Resource and Environmental Management Program steering committee, Natural Lands and Sustainable Transportation Committees, and Center for Natural Sciences Sustainability Group. Brown represents the college on the steering committee assisting the City of Ithaca in implementing an action plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions, and is a member of the Ithaca Carshare Board of Directors and Tompkins Renewable Energy Educational Alliance. She has also served on the Southern Cayuga School District Board of Education.

The director for student engagement and multicultural affairs, Terry Martinez has been with the college since 2003. She oversees the Center for Student Leadership and Involvement, Office for New Student Programs, and Office of Multicultural Affairs. A member of the New York Campus Compact Advisory Board, she heads the organization’s Statewide Student Commission. Formerly an executive member of the board of the Friends of Women’s Rights National Historic Park, Martinez has also been active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, the United Way and the Fresh Air Fund. She has served as a consultant to numerous not-for-profit organizations and state agencies, including the Governor’s Conference on Youth.

Congratulations to these three outstanding representatives of Ithaca College! It is great to see Colleen, Marian, and Terry receiving this well-deserved recognition, which is perhaps even more meaningful in a community like Ithaca, where there are so many wonderful people working for the common good.
