The Office of the Campus Center is excited to announce a number of changes to the Campus Center meeting rooms.

As previously announced in Intercom, the old TV lounges are in the process of being converted into a new meeting room that will seat between 30-35 persons. More information will be coming about this new space when it is closer to completion. The (old) Seminar and Conference Rooms are also in the process of being converted into e-meeting rooms. Along with the (old) North Meeting Room, these three spaces will have the same capacity as the e-classrooms on campus, allowing greater flexibility for presenters and those attending meetings.

With these exciting changes to the Campus Center meeting rooms, we are pleased to announce that that the five meeting rooms in the Campus Center have been given new names that reflect some of Tompkins County's natural attractions. Starting in the Fall Semester:

• The North Meeting Room will be the Taughannock Falls Meeting Room
• The South Meeting Room will be the Buttermilk Falls Meeting Room
• The new 2nd floor meeting room will be the Ithaca Falls Meeting Room
• The Seminar Room will be the Six Mile Creek Meeting Room
• The Conference Room will be the Cayuga Lake Meeting Room

In addition to the new names, we plan to updated the rooms with new artwork. In the fall, the Campus Center Advisory Committee will be seeking submissions of photography and/or artwork from students, faculty, and staff that feature any of the five attractions the rooms are named after. An intercom article will come out in the first week of September with details about the submission and selection process.

While assuaging the "institutional" aspect of their former descriptors, I think that the new names for the campus center meeting rooms are off the mark. Most rooms elsewhere on campus that have a designation other than a basic building and room number have been named to take note of an individual who has contributed to the campus community in some significant way. These "place" names in the Campus Center seem wholly out of character with that tradition. In addition, there are three "Falls" rooms with one, Taughannock, that challenges the familiar and the unfamiliar alike as to its proper pronunciation.

I must say I wholeheartedly disagree. I think the Campus Center's meeting spaces will be that much more welcoming and will exhibit a new personality. I'm especially delighted by the fact that student artwork will be used in all of the spaces.

I think our entire campus often lacks character. Naming rooms and places in honor of patrons is nice, but I don't think the personality of the campus should suffer until a worthy name comes along. CHS, CNS, ET, WT, T1-T12, all three dining halls ... the list goes on. At least now it'll be a little easier to differentiate between the Seminar Room and Conference Room.

I also think if you are living in Ithaca, part of the experience is taking in all the natural beauty around. Pronunciation is not a good reason to exclude one of the most gorges natural wonders in the region.

Good work Campus Center! You've made one alum happy.

While I welcome an alternative to the North Meeting Room (Taughannock Falls
room) for larger group meetings, I think it would have been nice to expand
Grande Central Cafe at the expense of a few seats in the new, Ithaca Falls room.
During busy times, it's elbow -to-elbow in Grande Central; an uncomfortable
situation for both staff and customers.
