As we prepare for the start of the fall semester it is important to remind everyone that the State of New York prohibits smoking in the public areas of all buildings within the state. As such Ithaca College has an established Smoking Policy (2.8.10) that directly addresses this for the campus community and provides a listing of the designated outdoor smoking areas. I believe IC should develop additional smokng policies. How bad is it when people must enter buildings while smokers are standing at the doorways (i.e. cigarette discard containers at entry to Muller, Textor, and other buildings). We must walk through smoke not only from smokers but many times the containers are "smoking." Smoking should not be allowed within 20 feet of the entrances. Since smoking is a known and major health hazzard, how about we become a non-smoking campus! The employees would be healther, possibly the medical insurance premiums would be lower, our students (especially those that do not smoke but are exposed to second hand smoke)would have a chance for a healther life and we wouldn't have cigarette butts all over the sidewalks or employees taking so many "smoke" breaks. Post signs at entrances and throughout the campus that IC is a non-smoking facility. I am a cancer survivor and I resent having to walk through smoke to get into my building. Right now I know 2 people in Muller who are undergoing cancer treatment, why must they be subjected to second hand smoke because they are choosing to work while undergoing treatment. IC should take a serous stand about this on-going problem.
