Are you planning to study abroad, or do you know a student who plans to study abroad in the spring of 2008? The application deadline for the Gilman International Scholarship Program is rapidly approaching!

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range and type of public and private institutions from all 50 states.

This year the Gilman International Scholarship Program will provide 850 scholarships of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for up to one academic year. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.

This program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship are now also eligible to receive a limited number of $3000 Critical Need Language Supplements. These are available for students studying a critical need language for a total possible award of $8000. A list of eligible languages can be found on the Gilman website at http://www.iie.org/gilman.

Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare.
