"Equal Rights: Reggae and Social Change," the Handwerker Gallery’s first exhibition of the academic year, will open on Tuesday, September 4.
A traveling exhibition curated by Herbie Miller, Josh Chamberlain and Catherine Amidon and organized by Plymouth State University, "Equal Rights" presents social history through Jamaican art and music and engages social discourse on culture and social change. The exhibition documents how visual, musical and vocal artists from the Jamaican Diaspora have addressed social and political issues in America and the wider international arena.
An opening reception will take place in the Gallery on Thursday, September 6, from :00 to 7:00 p.m.
Other events will include:
• A curator's talk by reggae historian, curator and producer Herbie Miller, September 18, 4:00 p.m.
• "Reggae: Its Roots and Evolution from Ska to Dancehall," a lecture by Herbie Miller, September 19, 6:30 p.m.
• An evening of reggae music, September 20, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
These events are cosponsored by the Ithaca College School of Business, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the School of Music, and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity.
The Handwerker Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Saturday & Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
