Timothy Johnson, associate professor of music theory, presents "The 'Endless Wakefulness' of Premier Chou in John Adams’s Opera, Nixon in China."

The illustrated talk is on Thursday, September 20, 12:10-1:00 in the Cayuga Lake Room (formerly the Conference Room) of the Campus Center.

First in this year's Colloquium Series of the Center for Faculty Excellence, this presentation discusses the conflicted emotions of the Premier and how Adams depicts Chou’s feelings through the shape of melodic lines and through harmonic structure. Timothy Johnson has returned from a sabbatical year studying the opera and its context, and also is prominent for his work on elements of baseball in the work of Charles Ives.

This year's Colloquium Series features scholarship with an international focus. All are open to everyone, and people are free to bring lunch. Coffee and light refreshments are provided. The schedule is at the Center for Faculty Excellence page.
