An inventory asset tag number is assigned to all college-owned computers and network printers provided by ITS for the purpose of tracking equipment in the Technology Renewal Program.

The asset tag number is helpful when you contact the Helpdesk to report a problem with a computer or printer. There is an asset tag number located on the equipment (look for a white, Ithaca College bar code label on the computer or printer; the asset number is located in the lower left of the label), but it's not always easy to get to or read. However, the asset tag number can also be found within the computer.

Windows

  • Double-click the LANDesk Remote Control icon (which looks like a TV remote control) in the system tray and look for Computer Name.
  • Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, click Computer Name tab and look for Full Computer Name.

Macintosh

  • Click the Apple Menu, choose About This Mac, click More Info and look for the asset number at the top of the window.
  • Click the Apple Menu, choose System Preferences, go to Internet & Network, double-click Sharing, look for Computer Name.

The asset tag number will look something like "A204321". It's a good idea to locate the number and jot it down so that you have it handy when you call the Helpdesk.
