On September 1, Timothy Johnson, associate professor of music theory, gave a presentation in Bangor, Wales, at the First International Conference on Music and Minimalism. He will give a version of this presentation at the Faculty Colloquium on Thursday, September 20, at 12:10 p.m. in the Cayuga Lake Room of the Campus Center.

His presentation is based on his recent research on John Adams's opera, Nixon in China, carried out during a sabbatical leave in 2006-2007. In this research Johnson is working on a manuscript for his third book, which explores relationships between music analysis and cultural, historical, and political perspectives.

His presentation on Thursday will explore Premier Chou En-lai's personal and political feelings, as reflected in the shape of Chou's melodic lines and the underlying harmonic structure. This talk is open to all and is geared toward musicians and non-musicians alike.
