Women are 52% of the population,
but only represent 14% of Congress.

So what is it really like for a woman
to run for political office in 2007?

Running in High Heels follows the particular struggles of a woman running for office through the eyes of 29-year-old Emily's political campaign as she runs for a State Senate seat in New York City's 29th District.

With her politically tone-deaf campaign manager glued to her hip at all times, Emily embarks on a journey alternately humorous and exasperating. Hitting the streets to court voters, Emily is grilled and questioned by tough New Yorkers with whom she struggles to connect in between long days of teaching math at a Bronx high school.

Intercut with Emily's story are interviews and commentary by notable women from the right and left of America's political spectrum, from Phyllis Schlafly to Rosalind Wiseman, whose work on the psychological warfare and unwritten social rules with which girls (and women) deal is the basis for the movie Mean Girls. Through their debates, they illustrate the controversy between what women say they want and the contradictions of what they act on.

Refreshments and discussion afterwards!

Sponsored by the women's studies program, the library, Office of Multicultural Affairs, sociology department, history department, politics department, and IC Feminists.
