Zimmermann wrote the introductory essay, "Cartographies of Impossible and Possible Worlds," for this book of Kienitz' photography of children in the midst of conflicts and war zones in the Middle East, Central America, Northern Ireland, and the United States.

The exhibition of his work, Small Arms -- Children of Conflict: Photographs by Michael Kienitz, will be on view at the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin, from September 8 to October 28, 2007.

All proceeds from the book and photographic print sales will be donated to international relief organizations dedicated to children in conflict zones.

Michael Kienitz has been a photographer for more than 35 years. Working on assignment, his photographs appeared in local newspapers including The Capital Times, Wisconsin State Journal, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, as well as national and international media such as Life, Time, and Newsweek. His photographs have been exhibited in the United States and Europe.
