On Sunday, October 7, volunteers with Action for AIDS (formerly the AIDS Working Group) took up their spades and planted 1,500 more spring-flowering daffodil bulbs on campus. This is the eighth consecutive year for this fall bulb planting, and this year's effort brings the number of flowers this group has planted so far to well over 10,000!

Established following the 2001 death of local AIDS activist Cleve Thomas, the annual planting honors Thomas' vision of the spring blooming of daffodils as a symbol of hope and renewal. Each spring, these sunny yellow bulbs create a truly spectacular display across campus.

In spring, these commemorative garden areas can be found massed in several main areas on campus:

* The right-hand hill of the back entrance as you leave campus;
* Along the bank between the Fitness Center and Hood/Hilliard Halls;
* Around the pond beside the access road that leads to the Public Safety/General Services and Facilities complex.

It's October, and we know full well what's ahead of us. Think spring!
