Curator Nicholas Muellner (cinema, photography, and media arts) will give a gallery talk on "Signal Trouble: Works by Sharon Hayes, Paul Swenbeck, and Marian Zhunin" currently on display at the Handwerker Gallery at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 15.
"Signal Trouble" brings together artists from Moscow, New York, and Philadelphia whose work offers complex, generous, and confounding narrative experiences. As with "Now Is the Winter," a larger exhibition in Moscow (in the summer of 2007) from which these works were selected, this project points to moral, political, and social crisis through the presentation of disappearance -- of logic, of narrative, of emotion, and of knowledge. Rather than presenting direct sociopolitical critique, these artists offer pointed and subjective field reports from these two alienated cultures of late empire. These works map our soft terror -- the abduction and discrete internment of the subject -- across the terrain of visual experience.
The Handwerker Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public.
