The Ithaca Brass will present a free concert on Monday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. The program highlights contrapuntal music written or arranged for brass.
The program includes two works by J. S. Bach and a set of 16th-century "Carmina," short pieces that combine the brass into duos and trios.
According to trumpeter Frank Campos, "The first half is rounded out with a suite by Samuel Scheidt that includes a well-known 'Battle Galliard,' in which one of the trumpets is pitted against the rest of the group in a sparkling call and answer."
"The program ends with one of the most difficult works in the repertoire, Ingolf Dahl's Music for Brass Instruments," Campos continued. "Dahl, a film music composer, based the piece on Bach's chorale, 'Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death.' This intense and moving work is considered a modern classic."
The other members of the Ithaca Brass are Kim Dunnick, trumpet; Alex Shuhan, French horn; Harold Reynolds, trombone; and David Unland, tuba. They will be joined by trombonist Francis Cook.
