Dear members of the campus community,

For the first time in Ithaca College's history, we will officially celebrate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday. We are excited to offer a wonderful day of diverse programming that will allow us to learn from one another and reflect on the important work performed by Dr. King in his short lifetime.

As an institution, we made a commitment to honor Dr. King's legacy by spending time educating ourselves about issues such as social justice and civil rights. As such, we remind you that our semester officially begins on January 21 -- with an array of educational activities to start off our semester with discourse about social issues, active participation in community service, and a showcase of talent from each of our academic schools.

The day begins with a special community breakfast featuring keynote speaker MC Lyte. From there, participants will have the opportunity to volunteer for the day at a local nonprofit or attend any of the workshops sponsored by our academic and student affairs programs. In the evening, watch a special interactive theater performance from the First-Year Scholars on the civil rights movement. End our special day with the second annual music school Celebration concert.

This daylong celebration will only be successful through your participation. We encourage you to register for any or all of the events scheduled for January 21, 2008, by visiting the website for the Center for Student Leadership and Involvement at https://www.ithaca.edu/csli/forms/mlkday.htm. In order for us to be accurate about space and food needs, please take a moment to register for the events to help us plan accordingly. Watch Intercom for updates on program specifics and special announcements about this historic day.

As a reminder to campus supervisors, this day of programming is targeted at students, faculty, and staff. Please be flexible to allow participation from all who are interested.

We thank you in advance for your support of this initiative.

Sincerely,

President Peggy R. Williams
