Contact Deb Mohlenhoff, dmohlen@ithaca.edu or 274-3222 for more information.

Trip Descriptions are as follows:

Katrina Relief
Lake Charles , Louisiana

Hurricane Katrina was probably the most devastating disaster we are likely to experience in our lifetime. Last year, 30 Ithaca College students, faculty, and staff worked to help the victims. One year later there are still many who need our help. This trip will be run through Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit organization, that rehabilitates homes for low-income homeowners . Volunteers at this site will be working with other ASB groups from around the country. Volunteer activities for this trip will include building a house for a family who lost their home in Hurricane Katrina.

Sustainable Immersion
Earthaven Ecovillage , NC

Students on this trip will immerse themselves in the lifestyle of an Intentional Community. Learn about sustainability and ecology as you participate in daily activities. These activities can include gardening, construction, cooking, and childcare. This is a great opportunity to learn about sustainability, the environment, and group living. Live intentionally for a week while making a difference.

Owsley County Outreach Center
Lucky Fork, KY

Experience the culture of Kentucky as you help preserve their cultural heritage. Students will interact with local residents by helping them in their daily lives. Owsley County is the second poorest county in the nation. Realizing that children were not eating over the weekend, one community member started a program to distribute seven meals to these students on Fridays. Volunteers will help in the organization, fundraising, and distribution of these meals. You'll work side by side with people who need you the most.

Nature Conservancy Trail Construction
Narrows , Virginia

The Narrow Preserve, located 20 miles from Blacksburg , is home to the Peters Mountain Mallow, an endangered plant found nowhere else in the world. These beautiful flowers require heat from fires in order to grow; however today they are having trouble living due to the fire prevention mentality. Students participating in this trip will be hiking up a mountain ridge located in the scenic Alleghany Mountains and clearing paths in order to create fire lines. A project like this can be rugged and demands a motivated crew that doesn't mind hiking and physical work. By building these fire lines, the Narrow Preserve will be able to use controlled fires to help this endangered plant survive. Students will have an extremely rewarding experience by helping to preserve a beautiful an endangered plant.

The Washington D.C. Experience
Washington , D.C.

Students on the D.C. Experience will take part in a series of short-term service experiences that allow them to explore multiple social issues. Students will also participate in monument studies and guided museum excursions in order to achieve a greater understanding of their work. The program is designed to provide an atmosphere where students can learn and grow as leaders and civic minded individuals. Students will be staying in the volunteer quarters of a homeless shelter to fully immerse themselves in the experience. You won't regret this shocking yet rewarding experience.
