Howard S. Erlich, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, enters his second year of a two-year term as chair of the American Conference of Academic Deans (ACAD).

ACAD is a professional organization of approximately 600 individual members -- primarily deans, assistant and associate deans, and chief academic officers. ACAD's primary mission is professional development opportunities for the aforementioned members.

For example, at its recent annual conference, held in conjunction with the American Association of Colleges and Universities, ACAD sponsored nine programs and two pre-conference workshops: one on the intersection of strategic planning by college trustees and the president, and the second on preparing for success as an assistant or associate dean. Additional information about ACAD may be found at its website:

Also at its annual conference, the second edition of the The Resource Handbook for Academic Deans was first available. (Details on its purchase may be found at www.acad-edu.org). Erlich has written a chapter in the handbook, titled "Evaluating Faculty for Raises."
