On Thursday, April 3, at 4:00 p.m. in the Center for Natural Sciences, room 112, join B. Paige Lawrence, associate professor of environmental medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, to explore the topic, "Do Pollutants Make You More Susceptible to the Flu?"
A major focus of Lawrence's research is defining the molecular mechanisms by which pollutants adversely affect the immune response to respiratory infection. The specific focus is currently on exposure to the common pollutant dioxin and its possible impact on human immune response to influenza-A viruses.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the most common sources of dioxin-like compounds are backyard barrel burning of refuse, municipal waste combustion, coal-fired utility boilers, and heavy-duty diesel trucks.
This Sustainability Café is held in conjunction with the Department of Biology Seminar Series.
