I-SEED Seeking Volunteers

Contributed by Deborah Mohlenhoff on 04/07/08

ITHACA SUPPORTING EDUCATIONAL EQUITY DEVELOPMENT (I-SEED) is seeking volunteers to assist with supporting programs in the Ithaca City School District.

Professor Roberta Wallitt has been working on a project in conjunction with the Village at Ithaca and as a Civic Leader Fellow with the Cornell Public Service Center that involves encouraging Ithaca employers and their employees to participate in efforts to support students in the Ithaca City School District.

Today, many students—especially students of color and students from low-income families—are falling through the cracks of Ithaca's public schools. Research has shown that parent and community involvement in schools is essential to student success. However, willing parents and caretakers are often unable to participate in the schools—whether it be by volunteering in the classroom, serving on hiring committees, or attending parent/teacher conferences, due to their work commitments. Community members without school age children who wish to support the schools also encounter this obstacle.

If you would like to know more about this project and how you can participate, you can find information at www.Villageatithaca.org or contact Roberta Wallitt at rwallitt@twcny.rr.com
