Public Safety Alert

Contributed by David Maley on 04/14/08

This is an update to the alert sent out early Monday morning through the Ithaca College Emergency Notification System.

The Office of Public Safety is continuing to investigate an armed robbery that occurred in a campus residence hall on Sunday, April 13.

Four students were robbed at about 11:15 p.m. in Garden Apartment building 27. The suspect entered their apartment through their unlocked door and displayed a handgun. He took cash and other items from the students, who were not injured, and told them not to call police. They notified the Office of Public Safety of the robbery about one hour later.

Public safety officers responded and conducted a search of the campus for the suspect, who has not been located. Based on the investigation to date, there is no indication that he remained on campus following the robbery or is a member of the campus community. The Office of Public Safety has increased its security patrols, and city and county law enforcement agencies have been alerted to be on the lookout for the suspect.

The suspect is described as a dark-complexioned black male with dreadlocks, 20-30 years old, 6 feet tall, and over 200 pounds. He was wearing black jeans, a black hoodie, and a purple bandana.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Office of Public Safety at 607-274-3333, or to leave an anonymous voice mail message at 607-274-1060.

Members of the campus community are reminded to always lock their doors and to report suspicious people or activity immediately to the Office of Public Safety.

To aid in the prevention of crime and to keep the campus community informed about safety and security issues on an ongoing basis, an institution must alert the campus community of certain crimes in a manner that is timely and will aid in the prevention of similar crimes.

As required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act [20 USC 1092 (f)], Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 and subsequent amendments, the crimes reported that mandate a "timely warning notice" are in the categories of aggravated assault, arson, burglary, murder and non-negligent homicide, robbery, sexual offenses (forcible and non-forcible), and motor vehicle theft.

The Office of Public Safety monitors the crime reports it receives from the campus community and local police agencies and issues public safety alerts to the campus community on any incidents that are considered to be a serious or continuing threat to students and employees.
