You have one Earth. We all need it to live. Join the IC Environmental Society and numerous sponsors as we celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by hosting a weeklong series of events, speakers, and opportunities for celebration and education on environmental issues.


Monday, April 21
Executive Director of Greenpeace International
Textor 102, 7:00-10:00 p.m.
Bill Richardson has been involved with Greenpeace since 1988, when he began working as a door-to-door canvas volunteer. Richardson discuss global climate change and Greenpeace, with a faculty panel of Susan Allen-Gil (associate professor of biology and coordinator of the environmental studies program), Warren Schlesinger (associate professor of business) and Marian Brown (special assistant to the provost).

Monday, April 21
Sustainable Menstruation and the Red Tent Event
Clark Lounge, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Stop by for ten minutes or two hours during an evening of discussion about healthy bodies, facts about the environmental and personal-health costs of commercial menstrual products, lots of sustainable alternatives (free giveaways!), healthy food, and more! Hosted by IC Feminists.

Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day)
Recovering the Sacred in Native America
Williams 323, 12:10-1:00 p.m.
Brooke Hansen (associate professor of anthropology) will discuss Native American environmentalism, and the struggles to preserve and protect Native American environments and cultures. Free light organic lunch provided.

Screening of The 11th Hour
Park Auditorium, 7:30-10:30 p.m.
With contributions from over 50 of the world's most prominent thinkers and activists, including physicist Stephen Hawking, Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, and journalist Paul Hawken, the film documents global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of ocean habitats. Free screening with panel discussion to follow; representatives from the film's production company, Tree Media, will be present!

Sustainability Cafe: "Restoration and Reciprocity: Finding Common Ground between Scientific and Traditional Ecological Knowledge"
Williams 317, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Robin Wall Kimmerer, director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, presents on intersections between localized environmental knowledge and the scientific accumulation of ecological understanding.

Want to be more vegetarian? Want to learn more about it? Eat tons of delicious veggie foods? Join us for a free dinner provided by GreenStar Co-op in a relaxing setting to learn about alternative eating options.

Presentations by student teams from the History of U.S. Environmental Thought course who researched local environmental history stories, using source material from the holdings of the History Center.

Natural Beauty Campaign
Textor 102, Noon-1:10 p.m.
Healthier products for your body and the environment, and ways to feel and look your best (inside and out). Free activities like trying new makeup or beauty products, hairstyling, and more! DiAnna Snyder, wellness department manager at GreenStar, will provide products and be on hand to answer questions. Free lunch is provided!
