Congratulations to two teams of students from the mathematics and physics departments who competed in the international 2008 Mathematical Contest in Modeling this March.

One team consisted of Kevin Piarulli (a math major), Steven Fusaro (computer science), and Srinjay Banerjee (math/computer science); and the other of Maksim Sipos (physics/computer science), Darius Romero (physics), and Nirbhik Chitrakar (physics).

Both teams received an honorable mention for their analysis of the problem of constructing Sodoku puzzles. After a grueling weekend of analysis and writing, each team submitted a solution which was judged along with 1,161 other teams from around the world. Seventy-six percent of the teams were from outside the United States.

The contest is held annually and sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications.
