Come to the physics seminar on Tuesday, April 29, at 12:10 p.m. in CNS 204 to listen to Suzanne Amador Kane's talk on the biophysical model of prokaryotic diversity in geothermal hot springs and its implications for early life on Earth. Kane is an associate professor of physics at Haverford College in Pennsylvania.

Recent field investigations of photosynthetic bacteria living in geothermal hot spring environments have revealed surprisingly complex ecosystems, with an unexpected level of genetic diversity. These systems are of special interest because they resemble ancestral communities from the early evolution of life on Earth, and their study should yield important insights into questions such as the emergence of eukaryotes.
