Assistant professor of psychology Jeff Holmes and professor Barney Beins, chair of the psychology department, each gave presentations at the International Conference for the Teaching of Psychology in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July.

Professor Holmes discussed issues of teaching psychology from a scientific standpoint and how it interacts with students' expectations. He also related student interests and personalities to professional interests and perspectives of faculty.

His talk was entitled "Contrasting Student and Instructor Views of Psychology." The study is part of ongoing research he is conducting at Ithaca College; previously completed research will appear this year in an article in the journal Teaching of Psychology, coauthored with Barney Beins.

Professor Beins gave a presentation entitled "Developing Critical Thinking in Research Methods," where he offered a variety of strategies for promoting critical thinking among psychology students. This presentation continues work on critical and scientific thinking published and presented previously.
