It is with a great deal of sadness that I must inform the Ithaca College community of the death of longtime enrollment dean Larry Metzger, M.S. '87, who passed away earlier this morning after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

An inspiring leader and astute manager, Larry was completely dedicated to Ithaca since joining the College as a research assistant in 1975. He was named director of institutional research in 1983 and dean of enrollment planning in 1996. He held a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University in addition to his master's degree from Ithaca.

Larry was instrumental in shaping Ithaca's increasingly talented and diverse student body, and his commitment to sharing the Ithaca experience with prospective students and families has had an enormous impact on the College's image and success. He championed major projects such as the Homer student information system implementation and Web Infrastructure and Branding Initiative. In partnership with the schools and the Office of Marketing Communications, he supported key institutional branding efforts and bold shifts in recruitment marketing, from the development of the IC Peers social networking community to the launch of the student-written magazine, Fuse.

I know the entire campus community joins me in extending our heartfelt prayers and best wishes to Larry's wife, Sarah, and their children Tom '02 and David '05.

Information on funeral services will be posted on Intercom.

Larry was truly one-of-a-kind, and I will never forget the huge grin he had on his face the day he granted permission to bring Fuse to life. Losing Larry is a devastating blow for his family and all who knew him, but especially for this College. His unwavering dedication, insight, and passion for this institution will be deeply missed.

Rest well, dear friend.

It's my good fortune to have known Larry since he first arrived at Ithaca College
- what a remarkable man who contributed so much to the well-being of the
institution. Of recent years he has also be an inspiration to those of us who
battle cancer. My heart goes out to Sarah and the boys!
